What is the Percentage?
Percent means ‘out of hundred’. It is the number with the denominator 100. In simple it is the share value of a whole number, where it is generally calculated out of 100. Usually, the percentage is calculated between two real numbers i.e. if you want to calculate the X% of Y, the X and Y should be a real number, whereas X≠0.
The percentage is used in the form of decimals and fractions, to describe the part of the whole. It is mathematically denoted by the sign ‘%’. When you divide a cell into 100 parts, every part is 1% of the whole. Hence, 50 cells are equal to 50%. In terms of fractions, it can denote as, and in terms of decimals, it is written as 0.50.
What is the percent increase?
Percent increase is the increase in the initial value which is calculated in terms of percentage. When you find out an increase in values, you simply subtract the initial value from the final value and the difference is the number of increases in a period.
Formula to calculate-
Percent Increase= ×100
- To calculate the percent increase of your initial value, substitute the values into the formulae.
- First, subtract the initial value from the increased final value.
- The difference you find will be divided by the initial value.
- Multiply the answer by 100 and the resultant value is the percent increase.
- If you have both values in the form of percentages, you can still follow the same procedure.
To solve the problem manually, let’s have a look at an example-
Consider John is working in a commercial company and earns Rs. 12000/- per month but now has got an increase of 2300/- per month. What is the percent increase?
Solution-
The initial value= is 12000
The final value= initial value + increased value
= 12000+2400
The final value = 14400/-
Now, to calculate the percent increase, substitute the following values into the formulae-
= × 100 or × 100
As we know the difference already, we can use it directly in the formula.

You can also calculate the percent change in the initial amount if you want to calculate the increase of values in years. For example, in 1980, the petrol rate was 20/- Rs and in 2020 it has increased to 70/- Rs. What is the percent change in the rates of petrol over years?
