How to take notes from a Textbook
Taking notes from the Textbook is a skill that every student should develop. Today’s syllabus is so wide and comprehensive. each and every chapter could not be taught in schools or colleges on available working days. Therefore students have to teach themselves what am trying to say is that they have to develop the habit of taking notes from the textbook.
Unfortunately, most students depend on digest and guide for the solution to their academic problem. Since childhood, they do not develop the habit of note-taking and note-making. When they go for higher studies suddenly they have to learn this art of note-making in less time. Which results in great catastrophe in their academic carrier.
Note: Taking is a very simple process. If you follow certain rules. And with practice, you will become a master of it. Let’s discuss how to take notes from the textbook.
How to take notes from Textbook the Right Way
Tips for Taking Notes from Textbook
I have divided the process of note-making into three parts
- Part 1: Rapid reading to grasp information.
- Part 2: Reading for understanding.
- Part 3: Takings Notes.
Part 1: Rapid reading to grasp information
First, select the chapter you want to make note of. Read the introductory paragraph carefully then go through the headings and subheadings. don’t miss even a single line at last read the conclusion and summary of the chapter carefully. This will give you a basic idea about the content of the chapter.
Part 2 Reading for understanding
I) Avoid Distractions: Now after rapid reading now you must understand what you have read that you should seat in a comfortable position in a calm place that does not have any noise or sound. Switch off the TV, mobile phones, and other gadgets which may distract you.
II) Divide the chapter into small parts: It is human nature that it cannot seat in one place for a long period of time our attention span is very small 15 minutes only after that our concentration and ability to remain focused exhausts. To overcome this difficulty we should divide the chapter into small parts of 8 to 10 pages. After reading 8 to 10 pages we should brief break of 5 min. During these 5 min breaks, we should do some eye and neck exercises and after that, we should resume our work.
III) Read actively: you should reach the chapter actively not passively. What I am trying to say is that you should understand the meaning of every topic line by line you should have a good dictionary with you if you encounter any difficult words. You should take your time to understand the topic. You should take a close look at diagrams, charts, and Tables. understand how they are explained using text. You should understand every topic logically, while reading you should ask yourself questions and look for answers in textbooks.
IV) Summarize the Entire chapter in mind: After you read the whole chapter carefully and actively summarize the entire chapter at a glance in mind don’t start note-making now just scan every topic as much as you can remember.
Part 3: Note making:
1. Be selective but not incomplete: Take your pen, pencil makers, and other useful stuff ready now we are going to start the actual process of note-making. Now you understand the lesson well Now use Marker Pen to write Headings Sub Headings should be written using different maker pens. You do not have to write every piece of information from text into notes be selective but at the same time don’t be incomplete. You should write only bullets point under each subheading. you should underline the keywords and definitions with the red marker. Instead of writing the whole information, you should write its summary in bullet points.
2. Use charts, Tables, mindmaps, and diagrams: You should use Charts, Tables, Mindmaps, and diagrams as much as possible. Our mind has a tendency to grasp visual information easily as compared to text. Therefore while making notes we should use charts, tables, mindmaps, and diagrams to a large extent. We should distinguish between two different things using tables and charts. we should correlate different topics using mindmaps.
3. Don’t be Copy cat: You should write notes in your own word as much as possible. If you have understood the topic well then it is easy for you to explain it in your own words. obviously, the definition and statements of law should be copied as it is from the textbook but an explanation of the definition and statement of law should be in your own words.
4. Organise your note: your note should be well organized the sequence of Headings and sub-headings should be according to the book. There should be proper spacing between the world and lines. Handwriting should be clean diagrams should be neatly drawn using color pens you should use a color pen carefully it should be used only if necessary to avoid unnecessary use of a color pen and marker pen.

Conclusion:
We have discussed the process of note-making and its advantages for students I hope this article was helpful to you it is a very simple process you just have to practice it regularly to learn it. Most students find this process difficult because they do not have a good vocabulary and grammar or they find it difficult because they have never attempted it. They use ready-made material available in the market in the form of a guide. My honest advice to all students is that when you go for professional course teachers will not and cannot complete the syllabus in time. you have to become your own teacher so start the habit of note-making from an early stage.
